Venus Williams moves into third round in US Open
World number 4 Venus Williams dispatched Rebecca Marino of Canada 7-6 (7-3), 6-3 to reach the third round of US Open on Wednesday.
The only US women player among top 32, Williams proclaimed loud to retake her glory back from injury.
The Canadian teenager forced a tie-breaker, but eventually succumed to the former world number one.
"I now know what it's like to play myself," Williams said told a TV interviewer immediately after the match.
The 19-year-old Marino was ahead in the first set, even in the tie-breaker, but couldn't expand her lead with three points nailed as Williams finished strongly.
In the second set, Marino fell behind and Williams closed things out thanks to less unforced errors.
Marino hit eight aces, four more than her opponent, less double faults (two to four), even more winners (27 to 24), but 23 more unforced errors cost heavy, 11 more than Williams.
