The Phillies have failed to score more than two runs in seven of their last eight games and while the entire team is responsible, sluggers Ryan Howard and Chase Utley shoulder most of the blame. Since returning from the DL, Howard has only managed three hits, all singles, in his last 24 at bats. Chase Utley is batting only .235 in his nine games back from his stint on the DL.
Mat Latos has been nice to bettors, his 13-5 record on the season has made MLB betting fans who bet $100 on every one of his games, $1066, which is good for sixth best total among starting pitchers. That money has really added up as lately as he’s put together a franchise record of 12 straight starts where he hasn’t allowed more than a couple of runs.
In those 12 starts, Latos is 8-1 with a 1.53 ERA.
On the mound tonight for the Phillies is star trade deadline acquisition Roy Oswalt. Oswalt made headlines Tuesday night by entering the Phillies extra innings game as a left fielder after Ryan Howard was tossed with no hitters left on the bench.
He’ll only have to worry about pitching and he’s been really solid over his last three games, he’s won three straight with an ERA of 1.29. He’s owned San Diego in his career, going 10-2 with a 2.56 ERA.
In tonight’s game, the under is just six runs and with Latos and Oswalt on the mound, that almost seems like two too many runs. This will be a pitcher’s duel; I like Oswalt to continue his San Diego dominance and the Phillies to continue their funk at the plate. I’m leaning towards the Phillies but I’ll limit my bet to the under six runs.
