Stuart Pettman withstood a fightback from Barry Pinches before securing his place in the final round of the Betfred.com World Snooker Championships with a 10-6 victory.

The Preston potter has qualified for the televised stages twice in his career, the last time was in 2004. He led 7-2 at the interval but Pinches flew out of the blocks tonight to make it 7-4 before Pettman could edge towards the win.

"It was pretty even for the first four frames. Tonight though I knew Barry would come out flying which he did to make it 7-4. After that I was lucky to have a couple of decent breaks and then I had a good break in the last frame to win the match.

"There's massive pressure on your first game at the World Champs, all the players will tell you that. I've got Stuart Bingham next which will be a good game, hopefully," said Pettman.

Rory McLeod is one match away from returning to the Crucible where he became the first black man to appear at the famous venue last year after he beat Jin Long 10-3.

"The first half was good the second was tough. At the end of the day my intention was to win my first match. I didn't have a good start to the season losing my first couple of matches. I'm happier now I've won a few. I'll spend the next couple of days practising hard and take the next match when it comes," McLeod told

Jin trailed 7-1 after the first session and had too much to do to prevent McLeod progressing, he faces Gerard Greene in the last round of qualifiers.

Ian McCulloch ended the dreams of Tony Drago for another season, with a 10-6 win. The Preston potter took the opening two frames of the evening session with a top run of 73. Drago then took three on the bounce including a century but McCulloch then made a composed 81 to seal the result.

Walsall's Mark Joyce kept his hopes of a first Crucible appearance alive with a 10-8 defeat of Michael Judge. Joyce had two runs of 75 including one in the eighteenth frame to confirm the win.

China's 18-year-old Anda Zhang achieved one of the best results of his career beating Andrew Higginson 10-8 to secure a last 48 place for the first time. Despite runs of 91, 77, 71 and 82 from the Widnes potter Anda replied with a 57 and 67 to move 9-8 up before taking a scrappy last frame.

Mark Davis beat Barry Pinches 10-7 in a match that had to be completed over three sessions and David Morris took the final place available in round five with a 10-6 win over Jamie Burnett.
