Gary Ablett dies at 46

Former Liverpool, Everton and Birmingham defender Gary Ablett has died aged 46 after a 16-month battle against non-Hodgkin's lymphoma.

Ablett began his career at Liverpool, before moving to the blue half of Merseyside in 1992. He made over 100 appearances for each club, and is the only man to win the FA Cup with both.

He subsequently enjoyed a three-year spell at Birmingham City and also played for Derby County, Hull City, Sheffield United, Wycombe Wanderers, Blackpool and Long Island Rough Riders.

He served on the coaching staffs of Everton and Liverpool before graduating to become Stockport County manager in 2009, a post he left the following year.

Ablett joined the Ipswich Town coaching staff and was diagnosed with non-Hodgkin's lymphoma, a form of blood cancer, after falling ill on the training ground.

A statement from the League Managers Association said: "Respected throughout the game by players, coaches and managers alike Gary will be sadly missed. The LMA’s thoughts and condolences are with Gary’s wife Jacqueline and children."

A Liverpool club statement said: "Everyone at Liverpool Football Club sends their condolences to Gary's family," while Everton said: "The thoughts of everyone at Everton are with Gary's family and friends at this tragic time."

Former Liverpool striker Michael Owen, a boyhood Everton fan, tweeted: "So sad to hear the news that Gary Ablett has passed away today aged 46. He played for some great clubs and had a career to be proud of. RIP"

Birmingham announced a minute's silence before their Championship match at.

Blues will also hold a minute's silence at St Andrew's on Saturday prior to their FA Cup third-round tie with Wolves.

"The thoughts of everyone connected with Birmingham City Football Club are with the friends and family of Gary Ablett," said a statement.

"Just like he battled as a fierce competitor on the pitch, Ablett fought non-Hodgkin's lymphoma for over a year before passing away peacefully.

"Our deepest sympathies  and condolences go out to Gary's wife Jacqueline and his children and everyone else that knew him."
