Bogomolov Jr. can play Davis Cup for Russia

Alex Bogomolov Jr. has been cleared to play Davis Cup for Russia, instead of the United States, after the International Tennis Federation approved the move on Thursday.

The 28-year-old Russian-born Bogomolov, who has represented the U.S. since turning professional in 2002, has never played in the World Group level of Davis Cup.

The world No. 34 Florida resident is now eligible to play for Russia when it meets Austria in a first-round tie in February. Bogomolov is now the highest- ranked Russian, one spot ahead of former top-10 performer Mikhail Youzhny.

Bogomolov was voted the most-improved player on the ATP World Tour this year after opening the campaign ranked 166th in the world. He reached a career-high No. 33 at one point.

His father, Alex Bogomolov Sr., is an acclaimed tennis coach in the former Soviet Union, having tutored the likes of former world No. 1 Yevgeny Kafelnikov and Andrei Medvedev.

Bogomolov Jr. was born in Moscow before moving to Mexico with his family when he was nine. He moved to Florida in 1992 and currently resides in Boca Raton.
