Ravens coach wins NFL's battle of brothers

Baltimore's John Harbaugh won the NFL's first battle of head-coaching brothers on Thursday as his hard-hitting Ravens defense smothered sibling Jim's San Francisco 49ers 16-6 at the M&T Bank Stadium.

"Great win for the Ravens," the Baltimore coach told reporters. "To the 49ers and my brother, I just can't tell you enough of how proud I am of and the job he has done building that football team."

The younger Harbaugh was equally complimentary of his brother.

"There's a saying that says, 'As iron sharpens iron, so does one man sharpen another,'" said Jim Harbaugh. "And let's say my brother John is the sharpest iron I've ever encountered."

Despite missing linebacker Ray Lewis, who sat out for a second consecutive game with a foot injury, the Ravens defense harried and hindered 49ers quarterback Alex Smith throughout.

Terrell Suggs led the Baltimore defense with three of their franchise-tying record nine sacks.

"I think the number one game plan was to win the Harbaugh Bowl," Suggs said. "Coach tried to downplay it, but it was really important to him. We, as a team, we went out there and really wanted to win for him."

Baltimore broke a 6-6 tie with the only touchdown of the game when quarterback Joe Flacco connected with tight end Dennis Pitta with an eight-yard pass over the middle.

The score came on the first play of the fourth quarter and capped a 16-play, 76-yard drive.

Penalties also played a significant role in the 49ers loss, their first in nine games.

Guard Chilo Rachal was called for an illegal block that wiped out a 75-yard touchdown pass from Smith to Ted Ginn that would have given San Francisco a 10-3 lead.

Cornerback Tarrell Brown intercepted a long pass by Flacco but was called for interference, which improved the Ravens' field position by 50 yards and set up a field goal by Billy Cundiff.
